CAREER GUIDANCE & CAREER COUNSELLING

‘What next’ after class 10th, after class 12th and after graduation has been the biggest concern among students and Parents in 21st Century some of which goes like this;

“I have no idea what I want to do in my life.”
“I don’t feel like I know enough about all the different careers available there to know what I want to do.”
“My family really wants me to be a Doctor but I’m not sure if that’s really what I want

In school a helpless 16 year old is faced with the choice of various streams – Humanities, Science with mathematics, science with biology and Commerce, and the only career guidance he has is the opinion of his parents, his teacher’s judgment based on his marks and the comments of his friends and neighbors which leads to Poor Academic Performance and eventually Child leaves the study as the forceful decision from others and non-interested stream fails to impress child for career growth.

Human capacities are infinite and can never be measured, nor are we to judge of what one can do. Every person has unique characteristics, for everyone has his or her own strengths and weaknesses. Career Counseling involves scientifically proven method such as aptitude tests and personality tests that gives best suited career advice to the student based on the report of his aptitude and personality.

BACK TO SCHOOL WITH NLP

NLP the accepted abbreviation for neuro linguistic programming is not a new concept although it is only in the last decade that it has started to become more widely accepted. NLP was originally devised in the 1970s and was the joint brainchild of a mathematician and computer scientist, Richard Bandler, and a professor in linguistics, John Grinder.

Combining their expertise, Bandler and Grinder came up with a system that would revolutionise the way in which the way in which communication and personal development was approached. Since this initial creation of what was dubbed NLP, it has moved on even further and is now used in a great range of fields including not just education but also marketing, management, counselling, medical, legal, sales and training. NLP is also a formally recognized type of psychotherapy.
Many of us are now aware of research into left and right brain function, learning styles and accelerating learning.  NLP encompasses all of these areas and moves them beyond theory into application in the classroom.  NLP uses language in powerful and elegant ways to ensure students really understand and are motivated to explore and learn more.  Teaching becomes easier and more enjoyable when you have the skills, behaviours, and attitudes of NLP to help you.
Richard Bandler says;
“Our greatest asset for the future is our children. We are not investing in our greatest asset.  We need to pay our teachers better, train them in learning strategies, and reward them for success.  After all knowledge is developing at an accelerating rate, to the point where people have to be able to learn as fast as they can.  Teachers need to teach children to learn things quickly. We have to get people into the right state of learning only what works and not worrying about mistakes because there is no time.”

MNEMONIC WITH NLP FOR STUDENTS

We expect students to mug-up or learn some things and when the student complaints that s/he is not able to learn any particular thing, then sing the jingle that we have been listening since generation, ‘keep repeating and it will happen.’ But in reality the answer hardly even serves quarter of the requirement. The result is that the things student is able to learn for the exam days of a session, gets vanish after that period and we get another topic to complain.

Mnemonic is a memory technique designed to help students improve their Learning and Retaining of important information. This technique connects new learning to prior knowledge through the use of visual and/or acoustic cues. The basic types of mnemonic strategies rely on the use of key words, rhyming words, or acronyms. Teachers may develop mnemonic strategies or have students come up with their own.

Mnemonic with NLP Program helps students to relate new information to what they have already learned through visual and verbal cues. The approach is often used in special education classes, but it can be applied in any class.
